Daphne Sheldrick's husband David was the first warden of Kenya's Tsavo East National Park in the 1950s. Her 1966 book The Orphans of Tsavo is about the menagerie of animals they ended up caring for in Tsavo, among them baby rhinos and elephants. Daphne opened a rhino and elephant orphanage at Nairobi National Park in 1977 and has since raised and rehabilitated 50 elephants and 12 Black rhinos. www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org
